Historic church coming up roses

A 600-YEAR-OLD church will be saying it with flowers this weekend.

St Augustine’s Church, Skirlaugh, one of the finest examples of Perpendicular architecture in the country, will be throwing open its doors for a flower festival, The Song of Creation – Sung in Flowers. Organisers are promising a weekend packed with events, starting with a ticket-only preview evening on Friday at 7.30pm with wine and savouries.

People will be able to see the flowers from 10am to 5pm on Saturday and there will be refreshments served all day and activities for children. The day will end with a musical evening with local choir Village Voices. Tickets are £5 and there are only a few left.

Activities on Sunday begin at 10.45am with an All Age Service in the church when children from Skirlaugh C of E Primary School will also be taking part.

This will be followed by a two-course lunch – tickets cost £6.

Between 12pm and 5pm the church will be open for viewing of the flowers. Proceeds are going towards a new sound system for the church, including a loop for the hard of hearing.

Tickets are available from Pam Wilkinson on 01964 562253.
