Historic Dales buildings to be open

SOME of the Yorkshire Dales’ most historic buildings will open their doors to the public for the first time next month.

The heritage sites, which are set in the heart of the Nidderdale area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB), will be showcased in a series of free special events to coincide with Heritage Open Days.

The programme, which runs from September 8 to 11, will allow visitors to take a guided tour around Swinton Park, explore the 500-year-old private residence of Padside Hall and take a look inside a 400-year-old cottage, set in the woodlands surrounding Fountains Abbey and Hackfall. Pateley Bridge Masonic Hall and Nidderdale Museum will also be on show.

The events have been organised as part of a project, funded by the Yorkshire Dales “Leader” programme, which encourages involvement in and the exploration of Nidderdale AONB’s heritage.

In addition to the Nidderdale events, a range of other sites in the AONB will be opening up for Heritage Open Days. These include Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, ‘The Ruin’, owned by the Landmark Trust, at Hackfall and Old St Mary’s Church in Pateley Bridge.
