Historic house seeks internet experts in push for visitors

A RECRUITMENT drive is under way at one of York’s most historic houses to sign up more volunteers to help promote the National Trust property on the internet.

Managers at Treasurer’s House, near York Minster, are hoping to bring in more volunteers as well as paid staff with two recruitment days tomorrow and Saturday.

But this year will see a major focus on attracting more online experts to promote the property on the internet after Twitter and Facebook sites were launched in the last six months.

Visitor services manager Lisa Holden said: “Like all businesses, we need a wide range of skills to help run the property. The National Trust is a charity and receives no funding from the Government, so our volunteers are a vital resource.”

A digital media assistant, Philippa Toop, is already helping out part-time, and it is hoped other volunteers will be recruited to work alongside her. The property already has a 300-strong team of volunteers and about 30 paid staff.

Treasurer’s House dates from the 15th century and is renowned for its interiors. It has also found fame for the ghosts of a Roman legion who reputedly march through the cellars.

Both recruitment open days will be held between 11.30am and 2pm. More information is also available by calling 01904 624247.
