Historic livestock market unveils plans for move

Plans to move one of Yorkshire’s most historic livestock markets have been unveiled.

A multi-million pound deal would see Malton Auction Market transfer from its present site, which dates back to medieval times, to a new location off the A64 bypass near Eden Camp.

A meeting will be held tomorrow to discuss the move.

The group overseeing the relocation of the market has revealed that a seven-and-a-half acre pocket of land has been donated by the Fitzwilliam Trust in a move that should secure its long-term future.

Pat Foxton told the Yorkshire Post that the current site was unsuitable for livestock sales and relocating would act as a lifeline.

He said: “Malton and Ryedale is an agricultural-based area. We don’t want it to go the same way as other great farming areas that have lost their market.”

The market attracts buyers from across the north of England and as far afield as the Scottish Borders and Wales.
