History-makers riding high

They had waited 86 years for a trophy and yesterday fans of Batley Bulldogs turned out to cheer on their team on an open-top bus tour.

The Bulldogs clinched silverware with a memorable victory in the Northern Rail Cup final last month, storming back to beat Widnes 25-24 in the final held in Blackpool.

After the bus tour Kirklees Mayor Andrew Palfreeman hosted an invitation-only civic reception to mark the team's achievement.

Coun Palfreeman said: "Winning the Northern Rail Cup is an outstanding achievement for everyone connected with the Bulldogs.

"It ended an 86-year wait for a trophy and made the people of Batley, not to mention the wider community, very proud."

The team boarded the bus at Wards Hill Court and made their way towards Market Place, where the players were greeted by Coun Palfreeman. The bus then departed for the Batley Irish Democratic League Club for the civic reception.
