History on a plate

CURATOR Andrew Moore examines an Slipware Plate as archaeological finds from two important historical sites go on display to celebrate the centenary of the society which helped unearth them.

The plate was made at a pottery in Manor Lodge, Sheffield between 1708/1738 and is on show at the University of Sheffield’s Western Bank Library to mark the 100 years since the Hunter Archaeological Society held its first meeting in Sheffield in 1912. Since then its members have been at the forefront of digs on the site of Sheffield Castle and at Manor Lodge.

It is now campaigning to save the remains of Sheffield Castle, which lie beneath the city’s markets complex, and other archaeological sites across the city. The exhibition runs until December 21.
