Hit-run driver knocks girl off cycle

POLICE are hunting a hit-and-run driver who knocked a teenager off her bike while she was cycling through the middle of York during the morning rush hour.

The 16-year-old escaped with cuts and bruises in the incident in the Holgate area, according to police who appealed for witnesses yesterday.

The collision happened at about 8.55am on Tuesday as the victim was pedalling along Holgate Road towards York city centre when she was hit by a red car.

North Yorkshire Police say the vehicle was believed to be a Ford Escort, which was pulling out of Watson Street.

The driver of the vehicle failed to stop at the scene and made off in the direction of Acomb. The victim was riding a black and silver bike and was carrying a distinctive black rucksack decorated with white skulls.

The girl suffered cuts, bruises, and bumps to the head. She was taken to York Hospital for treatment. Pc Mike Cooper, of York police, said: “I would like to trace the driver of the red car or anyone who witnessed the incident.

“The collision occurred at a busy time of day on a busy road, so it is quite possible that someone will have seen what happened.”
