Hitchhiker ‘delighted’ by Europe’s driving generosity

HITCHHIKING is less popular these days but one traveller relied on the kindness of strangers to travel 2,000 miles.

Novice hitchhiker Scott Evans, 27, ignored the doubters who said he would be lucky to get out of the UK on his nine-day charity trip.

But he made it through France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and into Italy before heading for Nice and a free flight home courtesy of Jet2.

The bank worker from Leeds expects to raise £5,000 for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal, which funds research and treatment.

Mr Evans was diagnosed with testicular cancer at 19 and last month celebrated five years cancer-free.

A recent survey suggested that few drivers were willing to pick up hitchers but Mr Evans was delighted with people’s generosity.

“This trip has restored my faith in humanity. For every bad person there are 10 others that are generous and kind,” he said.
