Hoard beats expectations to fetch over £135,000

THE finders of a “remarkable” 1,100-year-old hoard of coins discovered in North Yorkshire saw it go under the hammer yesterday for more than £135,000, far higher than expected. John Jackson and Mike Rickatson found the 65 Viking/Saxon silver coins and four ingots in Ryedale in 2012.

One of the sale’s highlights proved to be a coin bearing the image of a church believed to be the earliest depiction of York Minster, which fetched £15,600, well over its estimate.

Even a small 3.3gm ingot valued at just £80 to £120 made £1,800.

There were high levels of interest in the coins, sold as separate lots at Spink in London, with dozens of bidders taking part.

Expert Jon Mann said: “It proves how much interest there is in this period of history.”
