Holiday park to bring in up to £10m

A NEW holiday village at one of Yorkshire’s most popular tourist destinations is expected to create nearly 250 jobs and bring in as much as £10m to the local economy each year.

A planning application for the £5m development at the Lightwater Valley amusement park, near Ripon, has been approved by Harrogate Borough Council’s planning committee. The scheme will see 106 holiday lodges built along with new sports facilities including tennis and badminton courts.

It is estimated the development, which is due to open early next year, will bring an economic boost of between £8m and £10m each year and will create 243 new jobs, investing £800,000 in wages.

Marketing manager Simon Edwards said: “This has been a difficult year for outdoor attractions, and those without overnight accommodation have suffered the most. This news means that we are able to move confidently into the future and enhance the Lightwater Valley experience for our visitors.”

The development has received support from other attractions including Fountains Abbey, Newby Hall and Black Sheep Brewery. Conservative estimates have claimed 250,000 people visit Lightwater Valley along with Fountains Abbey and Newby Hall each year amid evidence of further major benefits to businesses if they can be persuaded to visit other parts of the region.
