Holiday postcards losing out to texts

Social media and smartphones are being blamed for the decline in the number of postcards sent by holidaymakers.

Just one Briton in six sends postcards while travelling, according to market researchers One Poll.

The research, covering 2,000 adults, found that 45 per cent had never sent postcards while on holiday and 46 per cent prefer to use text, Facebook and email while abroad.

Research from O2 Travel also reveals that the tradition of sending postcards while on holiday is fading, with only 16 per cent of UK holidaymakers sending cards while away.

The decline is set to continue with more than half of those aged under 24 having never sent postcards.

More than 60 per cent of people use text messages to keep those at home updated, while 39 per cent phone home, 34 per cent use
Facebook and 29 per cent plump for email, an O2 spokesman said.

More than a third of holidaymakers said they preferred not to send postcards they were too slow and 36 per cent said finding stamps or post boxes was too difficult.
