Holiday site expansion approved

THE owners of an historic North Yorkshire estate have welcomed a decision by the North York Moors National Park Authority (NYMNPA) to approve plans to expand one of the county’s oldest caravan sites.

Members of the NYMNPA agreed yesterday to the proposals by the Mulgrave Estate, which is owned by the Marquess of Normanby, and covers a section of the national park near Sandsend, to double in size a small caravan site which has been on its grounds since 1948.

Following the decision, John Hoyes, chief executive of the estate, told the Yorkshire Post the expansion to provide 20 touring caravan pitches, eight camping pitches and six permanent camping pods, as well as a new amenities block and access road, would be complete in time for the summer.

“We are delighted that the application has been passed and that the committee has seen its clear benefits to the local economy,” he said.

It is hoped that the new influx of visitors will provide an economic boost for businesses in the nearby village of Lythe, as well as being used by walkers on the popular route the Cleveland Way.
