Holidaymakers take off after a delay of a day

HOLIDAYMAKERS whose travel was delayed after a private jet crashed off the runway at Doncaster's Robin Hood Airport finally got off the ground yesterday after the wreckage was cleared.

The airport was closed for most of Thursday after on-site emergency crews were alerted to a Citation 10 executive jet which slid off the runway after an apparent mechanical failure.

Neither of the two crew members on board was hurt, but the Air Accidents Investigation Branch yesterday confirmed that two investigators had been dispatched to South Yorkshire to look into the incident.

Flights were suspended from about 10.20am on Thursday after the jet, which had flown in from Luton airport, lost control and crashed after apparently landing normally and taxiing towards the terminal.

The disruption to services came just a week after the airport was forced to close for several days as a result of the snow and ice.
