Holidaymakers taking a Christmas shopping trip to New York can save up to 62% on gifts compared with London prices, according to a new study.

Post Office Travel Money said the biggest bargains were for American goods, while European brands could cost significantly more on the other side of the Atlantic.

It compiled a list of 10 “must have” gifts for family members, saving an average of 43% and staying within the £390 duty free allowance.

The number one item is a Hasbro Star Wars Blade Builders Jedi Master Lightsaber which costs the equivalent of £34.48 in New York, some 62% cheaper than in the UK.

A pair of Vans Men’s Authentic Shoes are number two on the list, costing 59% less than in London at just £19.50.

The third item to look for according to the report, compiled with travel firm Cheapflights, is Hollister Women’s Jean Leggings, with the price tag dropping by 58% from £39 to £16.25 for those people who can make it to New York.

Conversely, a Karen Millen Knot Necklace Broderie Dress will set you back 67% more in the US at £300.71.

Andrew Brown of Post Office Travel Money, said: “Our survey of over 150 items makes it clear that there are still some rich pickings for savvy shoppers, which could result in savings of hundreds of pounds spent on Christmas shopping.

“However, sterling is still 16% weaker than last November so it is now doubly important for UK visitors to do their homework before parting with cash.

“It will pay dividends to know which brands to choose and which to avoid.”
