Holy new line of work for retired police

As police officers serving one of the country’s most visited cities, they were often asked for directions to the nearest landmarks.

Now, after retiring from the force, David MacLennan and Peter Marsland are set to make a career out of it after launching a business offering tours of York’s lesser-known churches.

The pair came up with the idea for HT Tours after Mr Marsland, a member of Holy Trinity Church, on Micklegate, realised that many visitors coming to the city didn’t know about his ancient church.

He said: “York has such a rich and varied Christian history, but visitors often just go to the Minster and miss out on the other churches. We want to help visitors explore the other churches in the city and discover how wonderful they are. Both David and I spent much of our police careers in York, so we know the city and its churches intimately.”

Mr MacLennan is a qualified tour guide and Mr Marsland is a church warden at Holy Trinity.

As well as looking at the history of York’s churches, HT Tours will show visitors Christian life in the city.
