Home care pledge for lung patients

A NEW community respiratory service aimed at reducing hospital admissions has been launched in North Lincolnshire.

The service, which focuses on oxygen therapy and pulmonary rehabilitation, will see more patients treated at home, where they will be offered support and regular reassessments.

It is being delivered by physiotherapists, specialist respiratory nurses, occupational therapists and dieticians based at Scunthorpe General Hospital.

Respiratory consultant Dr Stuart Baugh, who is leading the service, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to try and improve the quality of life of people living with lung disease. The aim is to provide them with the skills and knowledge to manage their condition with less admissions to hospital.

“There is no short-term fix for people living with chronic lung disease. It is a long-term condition and as such we need to engage with patients in planning their care and supporting them to self-care. This new service will provide personalised care, as well as support self-management to patients. They will receive disease-specific education and training to become more active and involved in their care planning.”
