Home port welcomes new queen of sea

Hundreds of people lined the quayside in her home port to welcome the 92,000-tonne liner.

Built in Italy, the 400m ship will be officially named at Southampton by the Queen on Monday.

The following day the 964ft vessel will depart on its maiden voyage – a 13-day cruise which includes stops in Lisbon, Tenerife and Madeira.

The new Queen Elizabeth is the third vessel of that name to join the Cunard fleet.

Full of art deco flourishes and featuring an 832-seat theatre, the new vessel can carry 2,068 passengers and 996 crew.
