Hopes high after dull Bank Holiday

WHAT a difference a week makes – tourism chiefs were putting on a brave face after yesterday's bright and balmy end to the Bank Holiday.

After a mixed bag of weather, including fog over Scarborough, Monday was predominately rain-free. But numbers on beaches were a stark

contrast to the previous weekend.

As one departing Scarborough visitor said: "It would have been perfect if last weekend had been the Bank Holiday."

However, Scarborough and other resort town centres were starting to hum again yesterday with crowds swelled by families who had booked for the full half-term week and were prepared to wait for the skies to clear.

And Scarborough councillor David Jeffels, a leading voice in the Yorkshire tourism industry, also pointed to heavy traffic on the A64 to the coast yesterday as a sign that – whatever the weather – the British seaside holiday was back.

He said: "The disappointing weather on Saturday and Sunday had some impact.

"But people seem to want to come to the seaside irrespective of the weather – and the sunshine today has certainly brought people onto the beaches."

Real summer may be just around the corner. Forecaster MeteoGroup predicts "really nice weather" and soaring temperatures starting tomorrow.
