Hopes high for trouble-free gipsy fair

ONE of the main events in the gipsy community's cultural calendar will take place this weekend and police are hoping it will be a trouble-free event.

The annual horse fair will take place on Saturday from 7.30am to 6pm at Aldham House Lane recreation ground in Wombwell.

The fair is a chance for members of the gipsy community to show, buy and sell horses and ponies. It has been a popular event for many years, attracting up to 600 people to the site.

The council says that members of the local community can be reassured that, as in previous years, any disruption will be kept to a minimum.

Inspector Les Portman of South Yorkshire Police said: "We will be policing this event at a neighbourhood level. We have worked closely with the organisers and Barnsley Council to ensure a safe and enjoyable day for all concerned. My staff will be present on the day to support the event, which I am sure will be a great success."

Barnsley Council assistant director for neighbourhood services Derek Williams said no aspect of the event would take place on surrounding roads and no streets would be closed. For more details call the council's Parks Services on 01226 774353.
