The RSPCA is investigating after the emaciated body of a young mare was found tied to a fence on the roadside near Snaith, in East Yorkshire.
Inspectors say the horse had been “dumped like rubbish” and must have been severely neglected because she was so thin.
Insp Claire Mitchell said: “It is so incredibly callous. She was so emaciated you could see every bone in her body. It is awful to even think of the amount of suffering she must’ve gone through in her short life. It is utterly heartbreaking.”
The horse was found on the side of the road on Between Rivers Lane on Saturday. The RSPCA does not know whether the horse was alive when she was dumped.
