Horse power hazard for traffic as travellers set out for famous fair

Horseman Andrew Barker regularly puts his horses out to graze by the side of the road as he makes his way to the famous Appleby Horse Fair.

Mr Barker, from Todmorden, has this week reached Clapham in North Yorkshire en route to the fair in Cumbria.

Many of those going to the famous annual gathering take a couple of weeks to make the journey.

Consequently, at this time of year, the county sees an influx of slow-moving horse-drawn trailers and caravans as travellers come from all across Europe. The fair, which starts next Thursday and runs until the following Tuesday, can attract as many as 50,000 visitors.

Cumbria Police have reminded drivers to be vigilant. Superintendent Sean Robinson said: “Each year thousands of visitors come to Appleby to see the fair and some are not familiar with our rural roads.

“We want people to arrive safely and encourage everyone to slow down and take their time. Also be considerate when passing horse-drawn vehicles; the horse can be easily “spooked” by fast cars and loud music,” he added.
