Horse is rescued from cesspit by firefighters

A PREGNANT horse was rescued from a cesspit by firefighters yesterday, after being trapped there all night.

Fire crews used heavy lifting gear to winch the 11-year-old horse to safety, after it had fallen through a concrete cover into the seven-foot-deep trench at a property in Hawkehouse Green Lane, Doncaster.

A vet sedated the shire horse, called Izzy, as South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue’s technical rescue unit got to work.

It’s believed Izzy had been in the cesspit all night, but appeared to be unharmed.

Izzy’s owner Linda Curtis said: “I can’t praise enough the officers and crews who attended. They did an absolutely brilliant job and are a credit to the county.”
