Hospital boosts blood disorder team

PATIENTS with blood disorders at Scunthorpe General Hospital have received a boost with the appointment of a new consultant to the haematology team.

Consultant haematologists Susan Levison will work alongside Dr Sanjeev Jalihal in providing inpatient and outpatient care.

Dr Levison, who was born and trained in Holland, said: “The patients usually have chronic conditions, which means that they stay under my care for most of their life which is very special and I like the fact you really get to know them.

“I see patients of all adult ages, ranging from 16 to 100 years old. A lot of the diseases we can now treat very successfully.

“There has been enormous progress in haematology in the last 10 years or so. There is not always a cure available, but a lot of conditions can be managed well and kept under control, improving the patients’ quality of life.

“The exciting thing in haematology is that new treatments are coming through all of the time. They are making a huge impact on what we are able to do.”

She will also seek permission to hold clinical trials, adding: “My main aim is to provide a first class, state-of-the-art haematology service.”
