Hospital event to tackle fuel poverty

HOSPITAL chiefs are today hosting a special event to help pensioners keep warm this winter in the face of soaring energy bills.

The event, for pensioners and their families, has been organised by York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and follows on from a Yorkshire Post report into a soaring fuel poverty crisis across the region with the problem particularly severe in rural North Yorkshire.

The Trust’s falls prevention co-ordinator Adele Harvey, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for older people to come and get first hand advice before the bad weather comes along.

“People can get advice on health matters, how to save money on heating, and who to contact in case of a winter emergency.”

Age UK’s Sally Hutchinson said: “We would urge people to prepare for winter now before the onslaught comes.

“Our volunteers can lend a hand with shopping, money and heating problems but it really helps if people have the right advice before they need it.”

The event, which also includes a slipper exchange, takes place at the York Hospital Social Club, White Cross Road, between 10am and 12pm.
