Hospital to scrap ante-natal classes

A Yorkshire hospital trust is to become the first in the country to scrap traditional ante-natal classes for parents – who will instead be asked to watch online films from next month.

Only teenage mothers at York Hospital will continue to benefit from the one-to-one 
instruction previously offered to all families.

NHS bosses say young mothers often do not have a partner to bring to classes and may be too bashful to go alone, so continuing to offer weekly sessions for them in closed groups will encourage them to attend.

Meanwhile, classes for couples will end in October – when expectant parents will be directed 
to the trust’s internet site to receive the information via a web-link.
