Hotel developers hope for Government cash backing

DEVELOPERS are seeking Government funding to help build a £15.5m hotel in Hull city centre.

Manor Property Group has applied for just over £3m from the Government’s regional growth fund to transform the site of the former Heaven and Hell nightclub into a three-star, 140-bedroom hotel.

The eight-storey hotel will be built on the corner of Anne Street and Osborne Street and could create 60 full-time jobs.

Developers say there is a recognised need for high class hotel accommodation in Hull.

Property consultant Malcolm Scott added: “Hull needs some more choice at the high quality end of the market. There’s three stars and there’s three stars – this is a good quality one with an international brand behind it so it does raise the profile considerably.

“We can’t bury our heads in the sand – we need the infrastructure for people to come and invest here.”

The scheme incorporates a paved garden area on the first floor along with two meeting rooms, a function room and a gym.

Hull Council supports the scheme.

Councillor John Robinson said: “The council fully supports this exciting project and looks forward to the opportunities it will bring to the city including new private sector jobs, training and development in tourism, promotion of the city region and the growth of conference marketing and events management.”

The nightclub is based in a former synagogue. The Hull Old Hebrew Congregation opened in September 1903, and was rebuilt in the 1950s after being destroyed in a German air raid.
