House prices show only slight increase

House prices were broadly unchanged during August as property market activity remained subdued, figures showed today.

The average cost of a home edged ahead by just 0.2 per cent during the month to stand at 167,953, following a 0.7 per cent rise in July, according to Halifax.

The recent gains have reversed most of the falls seen during the previous three months, leaving prices 16 per cent below their August 2007 peak.
