ERIC Pickles has blocked plans to build 100 homes on the edge of Strensall.
The Local Government Secretary has agreed with the recommendation of a planning inspector that the development would be damaging to the green belt
The planning application for the land at Brecks Lane from developer Linden Homes was initially approved by York Council but the decision was then made the subject of a public inquiry.
Both the council and the developer argued the original decision should be upheld but the planning inspector disagreed and her view has been backed by Mr Pickles.
Strensall with Towthorpe Parish Council and York Outer MP Julian Sturdy had both opposed the housing development.
The future of housing in York and in particular the number of homes needed has become one of the city’s major political issues.
