Housing scheme plans to be halted

A HOUSING development earmarked for the site of former reservoirs is due to be blocked after concerns were raised over the location of affordable homes.

An outline planning application is due to be considered by councillors in Harrogate on Tuesday next week to build up to 86 properties to the west of the spa town.

The proposed scheme by Keyland Development Limited would be built on two areas of land covering a total of 13.5 acres at the former Irongate Bridge Reservoir depot near Cornwall Road and the former Harlow Hill depot.

Reservoirs off Cornwall Road were decommissioned in 2007 and subsequently drained, although they still form major features on the site as large steep grassed embankments remain.

Harrogate Borough Council has received 116 letters of objection amid concerns over increases in traffic as well as the impact on the environment.

The council’s planning officers have recommended that the outline planning application should be refused as affordable housing is only proposed for the Harlow Hill site. They also raised concerns that there are no assurances the development would preserve a nearby conservation area.
