Housing scheme wins planners’ backing despite 300 letters of objection

A CONTROVERSIAL bid to build 54 new homes on a Craven greenfield site has won council officers’ backing.

Barratt and David Wilson Homes wants to build the new development, which would also include a car parking area, landscaped riverside walk and wildflower meadow, on land to the west of Holme Lane, Sutton in Craven.

Craven Council has received more than 300 letters from people objecting to the scheme but members of its planning committee will be advised to back the proposal when they meet on Wednesday.

Sutton in Craven Parish Council objects to the proposed homes and claims “further development is not needed at this time because local need has been adequately met by recent and on-going developments”.

However, a report to be considered by councillors says that “the provision of housing on this site is considered to be acceptable, in principle, in that it forms sustainable development in accordance with up-to-date national and regional planning policy”. It said the loss of the “green wedge” was not considered unacceptable in principle nor would it result in “unacceptable” joining together of neighbouring settlements.
