Families packed the beach at seaside resort Scarborough and youngsters paddled in the sea as the temperatures rose yesterday afternoon.

After the coldest Easter on record and a disappointing start to spring, Yorkshire welcomed the sunshine during a scorching May Bank holiday.

After a cloudy start yesterday morning temperatures peaked across the country at 22C.

Leeds enjoyed temperatures of at least 20C yesterday afternoon after the clouds disappeared.

Sunseekers made the most of the blazing weather and crowds gathered in the city’s Roundhay Park to soak up the rays.

Terraced bars in the city centre were bustling as people made the most of the sun as they enjoyed a day off from work.

This year’s sunny bank holiday has been a big improvement on last year, which saw rain and a top temperature of 16C at Exeter Airport.

On Saturday temperatures reached 18C in Lincolnshire and 18.3C in Cambridge before climbing to 20.9C at Hol Beach in Lincolnshire and Aberdeenshire.

But sadly the rising mercury levels are set to come to an end today with temperatures expected to fall before the weather turns cloudy and unsettled on Wednesday.

The good weather is not set to last, however, with forecasters predicting a wet front is set to move across the country with rain expected to descend across most of England throughout the course of tomorrow.

In addition to rain, very windy conditions are expected for the region by Thursday, with the weekend remaining unsettled.
