HS2 boss in North for business talks
as small firms cast doubt on project

THE man in charge of HS2 met Yorkshire business leaders last night to update them on the £50bn project to create a high-speed rail link between London and the North.

Sir David Higgins faced questions about how HS2 could make a difference rebalancing the UK economy and how it can transform connectivity between key regional cities.

The chairman of HS2 Ltd also responded to questions about what Yorkshire could be doing to secure practical benefits ahead of the first scheduled services.

Sir David was speaking at an event hosted by the Yorkshire Post and organised with investment agency Leeds and Partners and the Leeds Chamber of Commerce. Sir David was also joined by members of the HS2 Ltd board for the event.

The company is responsible for developing and promoting the UK’s new high speed rail network and is wholly owned by the Department for Transport.

Sir David’s visit to Leeds came as a new survey from Bradford Chamber of Commerce illustrated the challenge that HS2 faces in winning the support of some Yorkshire businesses.

This followed a survey from national law firm Nabarro which revealed that Yorkshire snall and medium-sized firms were generally not in favour of HS2.
