Huge blaze sends plume of smoke across South Yorkshire

FIREFIGHTERS were today battling flames at the scene of a large blaze involving around 2,000 tyres in South Yorkshire.

Fire crews were called to a waste recycling plant at a quarry on Wakefield Road in Hampole, Doncaster, early this morning. Plumes of smoke from the blaze could be seen ten miles away.

A South Yorkshire fire service spokesman said: "This is a deep-seated fire and we are expecting to be here for days rather than hours.

"Because of the amount of smoke in the area we would advise local residents to keep their doors and windows closed as a safety precaution."

There were reports this morning of smoke from the blaze affecting traffic on the A1.

Fire officers are liaising with officials from Doncaster Council, the site operators and the Environment Agency.
