Huge crowd expected at food festival targets

THE organisers of the York Food and Drink Festival say they are expecting a record-breaking year with more than 500,000 enthusiasts flocking to the city.

The York Food and Drink Festival is featuring an eclectic line-up this year, from an historical feast at Treasurer’s House to The Queen’s 2nd Gurkha Signal regiment from Nepal cooking up authentic Nepalese Gurkha curries to raise money for the North Yorkshire division of The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Families Association.

As interest in food continues to soar nationwide, organisers of the festival which runs from September 16 to 25, say they are planning for a bumper crop of visitors this year.

Michael Hjort, director of York Food and Drink Festival, said: “Last year saw 444,000 visitors at the festival and with the amazing line-up we have this year, we are sure to beat that.”

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “York Food and Drink Festival is a fantastic celebration of the very best produce that Yorkshire has to offer.

“This year’s festival looks set to be bigger and better than ever.”

Ticket sales for the event were launched yesterday at www.yorkfoodfestival.com.
