Huge response as children run together for Jane’s fund

FIFTEEN hundred children and parents met yesterday at the start line for the biggest free children’s event in the UK – the Jane Tomlinson’s Arena Group Junior and Mini Run.

The children were under starters orders from Millennium Square, Leeds, just after 9am for the run which took place in conjunction with the GDF SUEZ Leeds Half Marathon.

Mike Tomlinson, husband of the late Jane, said: “Each year the response we receive from children, school and families across West Yorkshire is overwhelming.

“It was always Jane’s wish to remove the barriers stopping children becoming active in sport. With the support of Leeds City Council and in particular event sponsor Arena Group, we’ve not only been able to raise event capacity but also remove the cost of entry.”

Leeds athlete Jane raised £1.85m for charity despite suffering terminal cancer. She died, aged 43, in 2007.

Schools from across the region also signed up to take part in this year’s School Challenge in the hope of winning a Toshiba video camera for their school.

Money raised from the event for the Jane Tomlinson Appeal will help pay to refurbish the waiting areas in Ward 48 and Ward 48a at Leeds General Infirmary.
