Huge response to city plan for traffic

MORE than 4,500 residents have come forward to express their views on plans for the biggest overhaul of York's congested road network in a decade.

Plans were unveiled last month by York Council to improve the historic approach to Micklegate Bar, which dates from the Roman era and is used by up to 17,000 drivers every day.

It is hoped he chosen scheme, costing up to 575,000, will help promote public transport while making one of the main routes into the city safer for both cyclists and pedestrians.

The council has revealed more than 4,500 questionnaires have already been completed online and by post as part of the consultation.

About 75 per cent of residents who have responded have called for improvements to be made to the Blossom Street junction next to Micklegate Bar.

Most, however, have been in favour of the first option which would introduce the minimum amount of modifications.

The consultation is continuing until Friday, March 26. Details are available on the council's website at www.york.gov.uk/blossomstreet
