Huge rise in job vacancies in Hull

It's already the Capital of Culture - and now Hull has been named as a mecca for jobseekers too.

The city has seen an astonishing 15 per cent rise in the number of vacancies available during the past year, according to a new survey.

Data from the recruitment website CV Library compared the number of jobs on offer in Hull in 2016 with the average number of positions advertised in 2015.

The figures put the new Capital of Culture holder in seventh position in a list of the top 10 UK cities for recruitment booms. The chart was topped by Liverpool - also a previous Capital of Culture - which saw a 23 per cent increase in the number of jobs available. The top 10 also featured Edinburgh, Southampton, London, Portsmouth, Manchester, Cardiff, Glasgow and Bristol.

But competition for Hull's vacancies has also risen, with a 17 per cent increase in applications for locally-based roles in 2016. Hull is behind only Birmingham and Liverpool for application growth.

CV Library founder Lee Biggins said:

“It’s great to see Hull’s job market performing so well, and it’s particularly good news for local job hunters who are looking for work this January. Applications are up, and this figure will inevitably rise this month as candidates embark on a fresh start in their careers. Hull is home to some thriving organisations and it’s nice to see that they are offering great job opportunities across some of the city’s core sectors.”
