Hull-born cartoonist’s work to go under the hammer

Work by the prolific Hull-born cartoonist Ern Shaw will be going under the hammer next month.

Inspired by British cartoonist and caricaturist Tom Webster, Shaw (1891-1986) developed his talents at an early age and had his first drawing published at the age of 12. The artist, who lived in Cottingham for many years, had a 60-year career, winning many admirers.

Images in the sale at Dee Atkinson and Harrison’s Driffield salesroom on June 11, include the Dingbats, the pixie-like characters that he created in the 1940s, as well his amusing, caricatured animals from his children’s colouring books.

There is also artwork from card games including Happy Families, Old Maid, Snap and Forfeits.

Former graphic designer Olwyn Cossins, who organised an exhibition of his work at the Ferens Art Gallery last year which attracted thousands of visitors, is putting up 36 lots for sale from her private collection. Prices range from between £25 and £300.

Mrs Cossins said: “I’d rather people in the area have some of his artwork.”

She believes Ern Shaw didn’t get the recognition he deserved: “It’s a great pity. He was a very talented man. He’s not a political cartoonist. He’s not fashionable and he’s from outside London. But I think it will appeal to people who knew Ern Shaw. They are just beautiful cartoons and the colours are so vibrant.”
