Hull council threatens to prosecute woman for putting clothes in wrong recycling pile

AN MP has offered to represent a woman facing prosecution for dumping charity bags near recycling bins free of charge.

Hull East MP Karl Turner, who formerly worked as a lawyer, said he was so concerned about the threat of action against Greba Lilly he would act on her behalf .

Mrs Lilly, a keen recycler, was summoned to a formal interview by Hull Council weeks after dropping off three bags containing her father’s clothes and curtains by overbrimming charity-owned bins outside a Hull supermarket.

The school teaching assistant, of Howdale Road in the city, said she had been unable to sleep properly since getting a letter warning of an “unlimited” fine and that she could face arrest if she did not attend the interview.

“I am not a flytipper,” she added. “By the side of the containers people had put some bags so I put mine there. There were no signs to tell me not to.”

Mr Turner said: “This legislation is not designed for her. If the council want to go to the trouble of prosecuting her I am prepared to turn up in court and represent her for free. I do support the council’s policy, but there has to be common sense.”

Hull Council is investigating and said commenting would be inappropriate.
