Humber Lifeboat, which started out with a rowing boat launched from the beach, is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year.

Coxswain Dave Steenvoorden said they were delighted: “Most of us are black and white and are all rugby league mad so when we heard Hull FC wanted to make us their charity of the year we were over the moon.

“Saving lives at sea takes a lot of dedication and determination, and I’m sure the guys will recognise that there are some real similarities between us.”

The link up will be announced to Hull FC fans at their home opener against Huddersfield Giants on February 12.

Mr Rule said: “Everyone is aware of this area’s links with the fishing industry and we felt this would be a great way to respect that heritage and hopefully raise a good amount of money for an extremely worthwhile cause that many of us probably underestimate.”

Hull Trinity House stationed the first lifeboat at Spurn Point in 1810. The RNLI took over the running of the lifeboat station in 1911. The anniversary is being marked with a series of events including a Service of Thanksgiving on April 25 at Hull’s Holy Trinity Church, when the 10 crew will turn out in their dress uniform of navy-blue Guernseys, medals and caps.
