Hull MP demands probe on NHS bosses’ pay

ALLEGATIONS about the running of an NHS trust need to be independently investigated and may even require police input, an MP said yesterday.

Hull West and Hessle MP Alan Johnson, speaking ahead of a meeting with Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, said he wanted a KPMG report on remuneration at Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust “explaining why some directors got enormous pay rises in a very short space of time” to be published in full.

The case of whistleblower director of infrastructure and development Pauline Lewin, who was suspended in July 2013 and has been on sick leave for the past six months, he said “epitomised the way anyone who criticised the regime was dealt with.”

He said: “It needs someone outside who is not part of the culture who can look at this absolutely independently. There may just be a case for the police to look at some of the issues.”

The trust was heavily criticised last year by inspectors over staff shortages and allegations of bullying and subsequently by ACAS which exposed problems of bullying, intimidation and nepotism. Former chief executive Phil Morley quit before the criticisms were made public and is now at the helm of Princess Alexandra Hospital in Essex.

Mr Johnson said the trust should work with Ms Lewin, “who has been the victim in all this” to “get an exit that’s acceptable to both.” The trust said the unpublished auditors’ report did not “raise any concerns around unlawful activity.”
