Hundreds expected at murdered church organist’s funeral

THE funeral of an organist who was murdered as he walked to midnight mass will take place next Wednesday at the church where he was due to play.

Alan Greaves, 68, died of head injuries after he was attacked on Greengate Lane in High Green, Sheffield, at around 11.10pm on Christmas Eve last year. The service will take place at St Saviour’s Church, Mortomley Lane, High Green, at 12 noon on Wednesday, and it expected that hundreds of mourners will attend.

South Yorkshire Police have been asked to organise road closures for the funeral and the force yesterday said a series of arrangements had been made.

A spokesman said: “Given the limited seating in St Saviour’s Church, the whole service will be relayed to a large screen at nearbyu St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church.

“At the request of Mr Greaves’ wife Maureen all are welcome and are advised that there will be provision of a warm drink and cake to all those not able to witness the service from within St Saviour’s and St Mary’s Church. These will be served prior to the start of the service.

“To accommodate the large number of mourners it is requested that all those wishing to attend allow sufficient time in order to be in position no later than 11.30am.”

Officers said limited parking will be available in Thorncliffe Park, off Mortomley Close.

Roads in the area will be closed between 10am and 2pm, although police said business and schools would not be affected.

Detectives have arrested and charged two men in connection with the murder of Mr Greaves, They are currently remanded in custody.
