Ice rink opens as pavements thaw

The popular Ice Cube skating rink at Millennium Square in Leeds city centre is back for the 10th year – re-opening on Saturday just in time to replace many of the city's outlying pavements for slipperiness.

Joanna Barnett, Jessica Guy and Keshyn Squires, all aged 13, from Thorpe Arch near Wetherby, were among the first to test the surface. This year, skating lessons are being offered for beginners of any age on Saturday mornings and for intermediate level skaters on Sundays. The first of the six sessions start this week, but bookings – which can be made on 0113 224 3801 – close on Friday.
