Icy start with risk of sleet over the weekend

Commuters are waking up to frost and ice on the roads this morning.

The eastern half of England has been waking up to temperatures as low as minus 4C (24.8F) before a crisp morning that is dry and clear with a risk of some icy patches on untreated roads.

A damp yet chilly start for Wales, western parts of England and Scotland and Northern Ireland, brings with it an increased risk of ice.

It prompted the Met Office to issue a yellow warning for ice that will remain in place until 10am.

Met Office forecaster Charlie Powell said: “For the morning motorists should take your time and drive according to the conditions.

“But going through the day we will see a bit of a change with cloud rolling in from the east and by lunchtime rain for Scotland, north west England, Northern Ireland, Wales and south west England.”

Mr Powell added: “That band will move eastwards and temperatures could get up to 10C (50F) in the London area later.

“During the weekend the UK will be split by a weather front with a north-south divide, although conditions will be similar across Saturday and Sunday.

“Wales and the Midlands and the South East should be mild, with temperatures peaking in London at 14C (57.2F).”

The average temperature for February in the South East is 9C (48.2F).

North of the divide temperatures are expected to be between 6C (42.8F) and 7C (44.6F) with a risk of rain and sleet on high ground.
