On Ilkla’ Moor Baht Helicopter

IT’S a rock hard conundrum that has left conservationists in a spin.

But when the Friends of Ilkley Moor were faced with moving hundreds of tonnes of stone flags to the summit of the moor they looked to the skies for a solution.

A helicopter has helped the Friends to move more than 500 tonnes of stone flags to the top of the iconic moor to help construct a new footpath.

The existing walk way has been transformed into a quagmire over the years but the new path will protect the moorland’s fragile peat areas.

The flags are being laid next to the existing pathways to encourage regeneration.

Barry Wilkinson from the Friends of Ilkley Moor said: “You can hear the helicopter right across Ilkley. I think people have realised that it is not the police now.”
