Improvement work praised at 'jewel in city's cultural crown'

A CEREMONY has taken place to mark the completion of extensive improvement works at Tudor Square in Sheffield.

The project has completely overhauled the public square – which lies between the Crucible and Lyceum theatres, the Winter Garden and Graves Art Gallery – and seen the installation of new planters, paving, cafe terraces, coloured lighting and seating.

The works were funded by 4.1m of investment from the European Regional Development Fund.

To mark the project's completion, Sheffield Council leader Paul Scriven was joined by Malcolm Taylor, from Yorkshire Forward, Dan Bates, from Sheffield Theatres, and Simon Green, executive director of place at Sheffield Council, for an official opening ceremony.

Coun Scriven said: "Tudor Square is the jewel in Sheffield's cultural crown. It has the largest concentration of theatres outside London and is visited by millions every single year.

"The square looks stunning, especially with the Christmas lights. I can't wait to see how the space is animated with cultural events.

"Tudor Square is a true Yorkshire success, with many of the materials coming from local suppliers. The boulders were produced here in Sheffield and the design and build was led by in-house teams."
