Incentive to cut fracture deaths

DOCTORS in Yorkshire are being urged to sign up to new financial incentives aimed at cutting the number of fractures caused by fragile bones.

GPs are now being paid for assessing patients for osteoporosis who have had a fracture and starting them on an appropriate treatment. In Sheffield, hip fracture rates in over 65s are above the national average and among the highest in the country.

The National Osteoporosis Society said they hoped the initiative would cut the number of fractures – and the 1,150 deaths from hip fractures that occur every month.
