Incinerator project nominated for award

A “UNIQUE” partnership between three local authorities, which has seen the development of one of the UK’s largest waste projects, has been recognised with a nomination for an international award.

The Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham (BDR) waste scheme has been shortlisted for the best waste, energy or water project at the Partnership Awards 2013, to take place in London on Thursday, May 23.

Together, the three councils secured £77.4m of Private Finance Initiative (PFI) funding from central Government towards building a new waste facility at Manvers, in the Dearne Valley.

The site, made up of a Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) plant and an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant, is set to open in 2015 and will process black bin waste from Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham.

David Kilduff, head of the Renewables, Energy and Resources Group at law firm Walker Morris, said yesterday: “We’re delighted the project has been shortlisted for this prestigious award.

“The standard of entries is extremely high, attracting a number of international submissions in addition to projects from across the UK, including not just waste projects but also water and energy projects too.

“Being shortlisted is recognition not only of the complexity and scale of this project but also it is a great example of joint working.”

Walker Morris was responsible for assembling a team of lawyers to advise the Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham councils when putting the project together.

The BDR project will go up against other schemes from the UK and the rest of the world, including projects in Australia and Egypt.

Meanwhile, Sheffield’s £2bn transport PFI project, with contractor Amey, has been shortlisted in four categories at the awards, while schools projects in Leeds and Hull have also been nominated.
