Increase in pupils 'at titan schools'

An increasing number of children are being taught in "titan" schools as the number of state secondaries has fallen since Labour came to power, the Tories claim.

Last year there were 3,225 maintained secondary schools in England, compared with 3,569 in 1997 – a fall of 344 (nearly 10 per cent), according to the Conservative analysis.

But at the same time, the numbers of pupils at maintained secondary schools has risen by 104,500.
