Industrial action threat in dispute over worker

RAIL passengers could face disruption after union members voted overwhelmingly for industrial action following the “unwarranted” redundancy of a member of staff.

Rail union RMT said members had shown their anger over the treatment of the Hull Trains employee by voting nine to one for both strike action and action short of a strike.

They believed she was being forced out of the company by “underhand means” for challenging a senior manager last year who was verbally abusing a colleague.

RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said: “RMT has given Hull Trains plenty of time and opportunity to reinstate our member but they have chosen instead to adopt a cavalier and confrontational attitude.

“Our members have registered their anger in an overwhelming vote for action which will now be considered by the union’s executive. “

In a statement Hull Trains said they wanted to resolve the matter quickly and amicably. It added: “Following the unfortunate but necessary redundancy of a Hull Trains employee and the subsequent ballot by the RMT seeking her reinstatement, we were disappointed to learn that trade union members voted in favour of industrial action.”

They were disappointed not to have received a response from the RMT to their formal offer to resolve the dispute on February 17.
